On February 24, 2025, the first meeting of the seminar "Ex Oriente lux" of the Department of Anthropology of the East was held.

The paper was given by Ms. Victoria Gerasimova, Junior Research Fellow. In her paper, the papergiver drew attention to the fact that several terms are used in relation to such tableware, and each of them reflects a tradition of academic description of different ceramics types: Vasa Samia, Vasa Ruba, Rhosica Vasa, terra sigillata, red-lacquer ceramics, Red slip ware. In addition, much time was devoted to the description of works of researchers representing different schools in Archaeology, as well as their contributions to the study of African red-lacquer ware.

The main part of the presentation included a description of the places and technologies of producing red-laced African tableware during the specific period. The seminar participants discussed the socio-political changes that affected the production of tableware and the connection of ornamentation with historical events. The changes in pottery production after the Arab conquest and the influence of particular workshops styles on the decoration of the sigil were also discussed.
